Weekend weaving courses

The workshops are always great fun and incredibly productive. My studio is part of a converted granary on a working farm with ponds on either side. In good weather, we are able to work outdoors.

Following a brief introduction on the history and traditions of the harvest and use of English Bulrush, it will be hands on for the rest of the weekend. You do not need any experience and you will have the opportunity to try a range of different techniques that will include weaving, twining, coiling, plaiting, knotting, sewing, roping and chair seating. It is possible to take home with you mats, hats, bags, baskets or a chair fully seated. The courses are not just for beginners, intermediate students and returners find the weekends inspiring and productive with students travelling to Colesden from as far away as Sweden,Holland, Germany and the USA. The courses are tailored as far as possible to meet the individual students’ needs.

Hi Felicity. Yet again thanks for another great weekend, absolutely wonderful, really encouraging, stimulating, uplifting, pure escapism, and felt I made some progress, plus meeting interesting fellow rush weavers. Although I’m still recovering from the lovely food, do thank Paskie again, wish I had a friend like her! - Suzanne, Norfolk 2017

Dear Felicity, I don't know how to express my gratitude. In an overused expression, the mats are breathtaking. Thankyou, It has been a pleasure from our first communication. Many thanks, Paul. - New York 2017

Hello Felicity, a slightly belated thank-you for a wonderful workshop last weekend - once again I'm amazed at your patience and the generosity with which you share your expertise (I'm sure a sense of humor helps too!). Nice people, great food, lovely rushes - what more could anyone ask for? - oh, and a delightful little dog too! Attached are photos of my finished tray/basket, with which I'm very pleased. I was particularly encouraged when I compared my table mat from this workshop with those I'd made on previous occasions - it was definitely much neater and with a more consistent tension, so I feel I am improving! Thanks again, and all good wishes - Clare, September 2016

"Hi Felicity, absolutely brilliant, another great weekend, just not long enough, absolute heaven, to be able to immerse myself in something without any interruptions, sheer bliss. Not only did I feel as though I made some progress with the weaving, it enforced my determination to continue at home, already got it organised in barn. But it was also great therapy, with inspiring surroundings and an opportunity to meet an interesting group of people, I left feeling so uplifted and calm... Thanks Felicity for making all this possible. As I said, if only I lived closer I would offer my services for mundane general duties, or even a week internship! Thanks again, now considering November date. Very best wishes, Suzanne." September 2016

Dear Felicity & fellow rush weavers. Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the weekend in my attempts in rush weaving; I enjoyed every minute & was very grateful for your patience with me & my basket Felicity! The food at Pasquale's was simply delicious & very well found, your energetic teaching and wonderful enthusiasm for working with rush and disseminating the information in your teaching was just great Felicity. Very good to meet you all & hope that you came safely home. With every good wish, Nicky, May 2015

I also had a fabulous time and am very pleased with my efforts! Thank you. Fenella, May 2015

I too really enjoyed the weekend it was fun meeting you all. I feel confident and inspired with Felicity's teaching to complete the rush mat I started at the weekend. Happy rushing. Alice, May 2015

Dear Felicity, it was lovely to spend the weekend before last with you and everyone involved in making it such an enjoyable experiecne. I learnt so much from your excellent tuition and my basket is on the windowsill for regular sightings, with the rush flowers in an old glass bottle. It was great to learn too from what everyone else was making, and to be in such good company. Thankyou too for catering for us so well - a real treat! I enjoyed seeing all the lovely things you make and being in such a creative environment. Thankyou so much. With best wishes to you, your mum, Ivor, and your friend Lynn who helped with the catering, and a pat to Molly! Liz, March 2016.

Dear Felicity, just a quick note to say thankyou so much for a fantastic workshop. It was great working with a new material, and I was interested to see how the rush worked, it is a wonderful thing! Andrew and I really enjoyed the two days, your workshop is really comfortable to work in, and the lovely lunches with cider were amazing! many thanks to all who catered, it was an added bonus to be so well fed and kept going with tea, coffee, and cake too. It was great to meet you, and a real privilege to see your work! I certainly won't forget it, you're a super teacher and your work is beautiful. Many many thanks Felicity, for such an inspiring weekend! Jane, March 2016

Dear Felicity, I just wanted to say a huge thank you for the wonderful three days at West Dean. Although, as you know I found it very tiring, I thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience. You were so kind and patient with me which made the difference between my thinking "what am I doing here" to instead thinking "this is great!" Most of my friends have now seen my pieces and are very impressed. They all want "The Hat"(They're not getting it!!!) - Jenny, February 2015

Another great weekend, I should have worked harder but it was such heaven working there at Grange Farm, so peaceful, with music on, door open, blue sky, birds singing and your enthusiasm, support and help, not to mention wonder the lunches. Can’t wait to be there again, June maybe. I will get the baskets finished but definitely not satisfied with standard of little round dome one!! Must do better if I can remember how! Very best wishes & thanks again Suzanne, March 2014

Thank you for taking such care of us over The Rush Working Weekend. It was a fantastic experience in wonderful surroundings. What immense work you do Felicity!.......Thank you again. Gillian from Devon. November 2013.

Thank you so much for a wonderful weekend workshop. I enjoyed myself enormously and feel very chuffed with my table mat and bowl with flower border. I trimmed it yesterday and will take some photos and email them to you. Thank you too for your teaching which I really benefited from and enjoyed, there was a friendly and welcoming atmosphere in the workshop and it was great to meet all the other students. Thanks also for the delicious lunches - compliments to the chef! Rebecca from London, March 2013.

Just wanted to say thank you for a fab weekend, superb tuition and stunning food. I have learnt so much and feel inspired to do more. Love my bag, many thanks again to Ivor for the lovely handles. Karen, from Cambridge, Sept 2012.

Thanks Felicity – It was an inspiring couple of days, and really opened my eyes to the world of rush! Thank you for bearing with me and helping me to complete the basket. I loved the plaiting, and will persevere with it. Back for more sometime in the next year or so! Christiane, from Bromley, Sept 2012.

Thanks again for a great weekend, I learned loads. Sally, from Cambridge, Sept 2011.

Thank you very much for an enriching weekend. I have had so many questions answered about methods and more insight into using Rush, as well as inspiring many thoughts of how to incorporate the beautiful Rush material into my design work. I intend to try out a few hat designs in Rush, as well as trying out some of the plaiting/coiled work for my course work at City Lit. I almost wish I was 16 again to apply for the apprenticeship!! as I realise there is so much more to try and learn. I appreciated your honesty and realism about using Rush in a commercial setting, as it puts into perspective the romance and the reality! Zoe, from Norfolk, Sept 2012.

Thanks so much for all you encouragement over the weekend, had a great time, thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks so much for all you encouragement over the weekend, had a great time, thoroughly enjoyed it. It is so wonderful to be able to focus on something for a block of time without any interruptions. I hope to be back in 2012. Suzanne, from, Norfolk Sept 2011.

Just wanted to say thank you again for a wonderful weekend. You have a brilliant set up there on Grange Farm and I found the whole experience very relaxing and as a teacher you are very patient and inspiring! I was very proud of my log basket and the looks of surprise as I have shown people what I made are great encouragement to carry on and practice the art! I hope to come back again and do another workshop soon... Justine, from Cheshire, Sept 2009.
